After months of waiting, the UK government unveiled on 11 September the first details of the £100 million (117 million euros) in aid promised to the UK fishing industry for innovation in fisheries.
This will provide UK fishing companies with more than £24 million (28 million euros) of investment to implement technology into their processes, test new equipment and encourage research into improving productivity and the long-term sustainability of the industry.
This aid was announced at the end of 2020 when the sector felt it had been left out of the Brexit negotiations. The UK authorities argue that it should “improve the productivity and long-term sustainability of the industry”.
The €117m fund has been split into three pillars: Science and Innovation, which aims to join forces between the fishing industry and scientists to research new, more productive and sustainable types of fishing gear and collect new data, among other things; Infrastructure, to be announced in the autumn, focusing on projects to strengthen the UK supply chain; and Skills and Training, which will support career opportunities in the fishing sector. The government has also launched a guide outlining the key points of the plan.
