The “Report on food consumption in Spain 2020” by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, presented at the beginning of June, states that the consumption of fishery products will increase in 2020.

The fact is that confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic inevitably marked 2020, affecting the eating habits of Spaniards and generating a change in consumption, with consumption being centred at home as people stayed at home for longer periods of time. With regard to the consumption of fish products, Spanish households bought 10.5% more in terms of volume and spent 13.8% more compared to the same period the previous year. The average price of these products rose by 3%, with an average of 8.92 euros per kilo. Households spent 12.90% of the average budget allocated to the purchase of food and beverages for the household on fish and seafood, while their share in volume was 3.60%.

As for the per capita expenditure on the purchase of fishing products, it was 221.48 euros per kilo, 13.5% more than what was invested during the previous year. On average, and in terms of volume, each Spaniard consumed 24.83 kilos during the year, 10.2% more than in the previous year, the equivalent of consuming 2.30 kilos more products per person per year.

Among the different products, the most consumed were fresh fish, with an average intake of 10.58 kilos, an amount higher than that consumed in 2019 (9.76 kilograms per person per year).
